Welcome to MONTREAL startuptour! My name is Felipe. I live in Montreal since 2008 and it's one of my favourite cities in the world. Great place to live and start a business. Friendly people, lots of stuff to do, and an active startup community.
In 2010 I decided to have some of the startups in Montreal to give me a tour of the part of the city where they live/work, what it's like, their favourite spots, and finally to share a bit about their startup.
PS: Keep in mind that these videos were recorded in the Summer of 2010. In startup years, that was a long time ago, so a lot of things might have changed.
Montreal Startup Tour Project
Hi there, I'm Felipe Coimbra. This was a quick project I decided to do in the Summer of 2010 in the city I've chosen to call home. Montreal is not only a great city to live, but also a great city to work on a startup. There is a lot going on here and I wanted to show a little bit of it. |
Le Plateau du Mont-Royal (boul. St Laurent)
Started with Greg Whiteside of Canvious showing places along boul St-Laurent. Then a quick stop at Bolidea (went up to the rooftop of their Offices) And lastly we visited Station-C, one of the coworking spaces in Montreal. |
Le Plateau du Mont-Royal (Parc La Fontaine)
Visited the Ajah team at their office in the Plateau, then we went for a walk about the neighborhood and though Parc La Fontaine. They're all very active in the community organizing events and participating in other organizations in Montreal. |
Le Plateau du Mont-Royal (Avenue du Mont-Royal)
Met up with Evan of Status.net for some coffee and a quick walk around the Plateau. And learned a bit about how he ended up in Montreal from SF. |
Notman House
Tour of the Notman House with John Stokes and Daniel Druet. |
Notman House with Real Ventures
Quick interview with John Stokes about Real Ventures and the FounderFuel accelerator program. |
Downtown with SDEVM
Talked to Christian Perron, director of SDEVM, and the programs they offer to startups and entrepreneurs in Montreal. The SDEVM is also a sponsor of the Montreal NewTech Meetup group. They're great resources for people starting a business downtown Montreal. |
Downtown (Rue St-Catherine)
Met with the Shwowp (now Buyosphere) team at their office and learned about what they're working on. Then, we walked on Rue St-Catherine with one of the cofounders (Tara Hunt.) |
Downtown (Guy-Concordia)
Met with my friend Kathryn Presner for a quick tour of the part of downtown that I'd been living for a couple of years. She's very knowledgeable about Montreal and great restaurants. Also very active in the WordPress community. |
Old Montreal
| Met up with the trainingmobs team, who live and work in Old Montreal for a quick tour and to learn a bit about what they're working on and how they met. |
Westmount
Visited Philippe Telio's office in Westmount. Phil is very active in the startup community in Montreal. He organizes Montreal StartupCamp and Startup Festival. We went for a quick walk around Westmount, which is primarily residential, just west of downtown Montreal. |
Mile-End / Outremont
| This was not the best day for a tour, but Michelle Sullivan was kind enough to walk around in the rain in the neighborhood of Mile-End, which she's lived for many years. |
Griffintown
Met with Alistair Croll on the very first day that they moved into their new offices in Griffintown. Walked around Griffintown, Canal LaChine and talked about theirs plans for Year-One-Labs. |
Olympic Park
Met up with a couple of entrepreneurs and travel bloggers who happened to be in Montreal on their trip around the world. Todd and Lauren actually stayed in Montreal for a few months and are considering calling it home at some point. |
